A technique (in case you don't already know) where you apply liquid wax with a paint brush in decorative patterns or marks. After it has dried you apply a colour mixed with water. In this case it is usually a water based coloured slip.  The wax repels the water based slip and acts like a mask for the waxed areas. This can be built up in layers, starting with waxing areas that are lightest in colour first.
