A technique (in case you don't already know) where you apply liquid wax with a paint brush in decorative patterns or marks. After it has dried you apply a colour mixed with water. In this case it is usually a water based coloured slip. Where the wax is the water is repelled leaving the area un-coloured. This can be built up in layers, starting with waxing areas that are lightest in colour first.
